ACCDheld, in cooperation with the American University in Cairo (AUC), a Seminar entitled "Future Horizons of Cooperation to Confront the Phenomenon of Street Children" on 25 June 2001. It proceeded from the necessity to expand the scope of awareness on the Arab as well as the international academic levels, with the view to activate their roles in combating a diversity of the serious social problems such as street children. The goal of this Seminar was to work collaboratively with the academic institutions and provide a mechanism for partnership with the various active local and international organizations of the society, in addition to shedding the light on ACCD's activities in this field.
TheSeminar was attended by 110 participants represented the Egyptian National Council For Childhood and Motherhood, the Ministries of Social Affairs and of Interior, a number of NGOs, regional and international organizations as well as an array of experts, researchers and media specialists.
The Seminar, which was held at AUC, reviewed a number of working papers that focused on the nature and dimensions of the phenomenon of street children, drug addiction among them, all forms of child abuse particularly sexual exploitation, the preventive and protective ways to children exposed to dangers, the role of programs and activities in rehabilitating street children, as well as the psychological methods of recognizing the problems of those children. One of the most important studies that were reviewed during the Seminar, is a study conducted by a number of AUC students on the phenomenon of street children in Egypt.
The recommendations of the Seminar stressed the importance of establishing a governmental /non-governmental network to coordinate the efforts of confronting this phenomenon, and preparing an integrated media plan aiming at raising the public awareness about the dangers of this phenomenon on the development of society. This is in addition to searching for qualified cadres, conducting studies and research, and enhancing family education and society development programs especially inside the destitute areas.
